Gum disease and tooth
decay ruined my smile and in the end I lost all of my teeth. I ignored my dentist's advise back then, and sure
enough, one by one, my teeth were falling out. After the trauma of
having the last teeth removed I had a temporary denture that made eating
almost impossible. When the permanent denture was ready it was an
improvement but the lower denture didn't want to stay in place. Easting
was still a challenge and I rarely ate in front of others.
My dentist suggested I think
about dentures that are held in place with dental implants. Metal posts
that are inserted in my jaw and attached to the denture itself. This is
not a cheap solution, but it did seem like it would solve all of my
denture issues. It isn't a fast solution either. While the actual
surgery and dental visits didn't take long, waiting for my jaw bone to
attach to the implants was a slow process. All told it was about six
months beginning to end.
The result has been life
changing. There are times forget I even have dentures and I can
eat pretty much anything I want. Nothing is as good as your real teeth,
but if you're in my situation nothing beats dentures attached to
implants. I smile more than ever now and only wish I had it done sooner.
